What it is
A short-chain phthalate, colourless oily liquid, still one of the most commonly used phthalates in personal care.
What it does
Solvent and fixative for fragrance compounds, denaturant for ethanol, and carrier in hairsprays and perfumes. Often the phthalate hiding behind “parfum” or “fragrance” on labels.
Why it’s a concern
DEP is detected in nearly 100% of urine samples in US biomonitoring surveys, reflecting near-universal exposure. A 2014 study by Swan et al. (Human Reproduction) linked prenatal DEP exposure to attention deficits and behavioural changes in children. It is less potent an anti-androgen than DBP or DEHP but accumulates through daily exposure to fragranced products.
