What it is
A lead salt historically used as a gradual hair dye (“progressive hair colour”).
What it does
Colours greying hair progressively as lead sulfide forms on the hair shaft.
Why it’s a concern
Lead is a known neurotoxin with no safe exposure level identified by the CDC. The FDA revoked approval of lead acetate in cosmetics in October 2018 (manufacturers’ compliance deadline: 6 January 2020) following a petition by the Environmental Defense Fund noting safer alternatives. Previously found in products such as Grecian Formula.
