The simplest ethanolamine, a clear viscous liquid with an ammonia-like odour.
What it does
pH adjuster, emulsifier, and alkalising agent.
Why it’s a concern
Strong skin irritant at working concentrations. Can react with nitrosating agents, though to a lesser extent than DEA or TEA, to form carcinogenic nitrosamines. A respiratory sensitiser in occupational settings.
