What it is
A short-chain perfluoroalkyl silane, a PFAS used as a surface modifier.
What it does
Provides long-wear, water-resistant properties in cosmetics and coatings.
Why it’s a concern
All PFAS share extreme environmental persistence and widespread human biomonitoring detection. Short-chain PFAS once promoted as safer have been shown to be equally persistent and mobile in water. Will be covered by state-level cosmetics PFAS bans coming into force from 2025.
