What it is
A semi-solid mixture of saturated hydrocarbons derived from petroleum refining.
What it does
Occlusive that seals moisture into skin, used in ointments, lip balms, and baby products.
Why it’s a concern
Unrefined or poorly refined petrolatum can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), some of which are known human carcinogens per IARC. The EU requires petrolatum to meet strict refining standards (complete refining history known) for cosmetic use; the US has no equivalent requirement. Ask manufacturers whether their petrolatum is USP/EP-grade.
