What it is
A fluorinated polymer classified as a PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance).
What it does
Creates slip and smoothness in cosmetics, dental floss, nonstick cookware, and waterproofing.
Why it’s a concern
PFAS as a class are extremely persistent (forever chemicals) and have been detected in drinking water, blood, and breast milk worldwide. A 2021 study (Whitehead et al., Environmental Science and Technology Letters) found high fluorine levels in more than half of 231 cosmetics tested; PTFE was among the identified ingredients. US states Washington, Colorado, and California have banned intentional PFAS in cosmetics from 2025 onward.
