What it is
An anionic sulfate surfactant produced by sulfonation of lauryl alcohol.
What it does
Powerful cleanser and foaming agent in shampoos, toothpaste, and body wash.
Why it’s a concern
SLS is a well-documented skin irritant used in dermatology research as a positive control for irritant contact dermatitis. It strips the skin’s lipid barrier, potentially worsening eczema, rosacea, and sensitive skin. While SLS itself is not an endocrine disruptor, it can amplify penetration of other harmful ingredients.
