What it is

The tetrasodium salt of EDTA, a synthetic chelating agent.

What it does

Binds metal ions to stabilise formulas, boost surfactant performance, and preserve integrity.

Why it’s a concern

EDTA is highly persistent in the environment and can remobilise heavy metals in wastewater treatment and sediment. Can enhance skin penetration of other ingredients. Generally low acute toxicity to humans; environmental load is the larger concern.
